Engaging Family Lawyers

SOME TIPS ABOUT ENGAGING US AS YOUR LAWYER

  1. Be aware of the costs - we have fixed fees for the first appointment whether by telephone or otherwise.  After the first appointment the fees will be at hourly rates or at the fixed fee negotiated with you.
  2. Prepare notes for your first appointment - it will save time.  Give us a history of your relationship in financial terms - eg when was an asset purchased and value and where did the funds come from.
  3. Take notes when getting your initial advice.  We provide quite a bit of information in the meeting and you may not remember if you don't take notes.
  4. Make sure you understand what we are advising you and if you are unsure just ask.  Its better that we and you are on the same page and understand what work has to be undertaken on your behalf.
  5. We will enter into a client agreement with you about the costs we charge after the first appointment.  We always provide our clients will those agreements to ensure there are no misunderstandings about the basis upon which we are going to charge.
  6. Make sure you feel comfortable with your lawyer and have confidence in him or her because that is both in your best interests and ours.  We want to work with you and avoid misunderstandings.
  7. Remember whilst you might sign a client agreement with a lawyer you can still change lawyers at any time - that is your right.  However, lawyers are able to retain your file until payment is made of any outstanding accounts.
  8. Complete our Initial Consutlation form  and bring it with you to your appointment, it will save time.
